What is a Touch Screen?

A touch screen is a technology that has become increasingly common in our daily lives. You probably already own a smartphone, tablet, e-reader, or GPS device, and many businesses are using them. You may even see touchscreens in other places around town, including video rental machines, automatic teller machines, and soda machines in some restaurants. It's a fast, efficient way to operate a computer or device. And with its low cost and broad functionality, touchscreens are more convenient than ever before.

A touch screen works by reading a change in the electrical field created by a user's finger touching it. A processor records this change and calculates the coordinates of the point of contact and relays that information to the operating system. There are three types of touch screen panels: resistive, capacitive, and surface-wave-based systems. Resistive touch screens offer up to 75 percent clarity, but are prone to damage from sharp objects.

Touchscreens are gaining in popularity as an innovative means of interaction. They are now being used in a variety of information appliances, including medical equipment, automated teller machines, museum displays, and room automation. Unlike keyboard and mouse systems, which require a user to learn the intricacies of a touch screen device, the user does not need to receive extensive training before using it. The interface of a touchscreen is realistic and intuitive, so it does not require extensive training.

Touch screens also feature a unique technology that lets you control the amount of time a child can spend using a computer. A microchip in the touch screen monitor records the location of a user's finger's touch. The controller then sends the correct command to the appropriate device when the user requests it. Often, a light sensor or an infrared camera is embedded in a touch screen monitor. The camera is usually located to one side of the screen.

The most common touch screen technology is 5-Wire Resistive Touch. These touch screens consist of a glass panel and a film screen separated by a thin gap. When a finger presses on the screen, an electrical current flows through the screen and a software program determines where the finger is pressing. If a finger touches the screen, a change in voltage occurs that signals the user has made contact with the screen. This process allows the user to manipulate objects and input data without disrupting the screen.

A touch screen is a highly useful piece of technology for businesses and consumers alike. In many cases, the technology enables customers to serve themselves. For example, a touchscreen can provide information on malls and restaurants, or allow people to choose their meals from a menu. Another touch screen technology is a Projected Capacitive (P-Cap). This type of touchscreen is very similar to a normal capacitive touch screen, but can be activated by surgical gloves and thin cotton gloves. The P-Cap touchscreen is made up of a sheet of glass with embedded electrode films and an IC chip that creates a three-dimensional electrostatic field. A finger's contact with the screen alters electrical currents.
